The Flint Bowmen Archery Club first began in the late
thirties by a few local businessmen who had a similar interest in
the bow and arrow. They held their shoots and leagues wherever they
could find the room or a field where they could fling a few cedar
shafts. Local gymnasiums were used to shoot the 20-yard shot and
what is now
Brookwood Golf Course was one
of the area fields that they used.
Flint Bowmen is said to be the oldest incorporated archery club in
the state of Michigan. There have been and are many state and
national champions who call Flint Bowmen home. In the early stages
of archery, in this state and around the country, Flint Bowmen was a
leading force in the sport. Flint Bowmen now stands on about
40 acres of wooded land which
was purchased around 1954. Of course it's changed a bit. With many
improvements over the years, it is a great example of what a good
family-oriented club can become. The club started with a small
building just big enough to hold targets to keep them dry. Now, with
many additions, we have a building big enough for a 20-yard indoor
shooting range plus a kitchen, a meeting room, a work room and more
than enough space to make sure none of our targets, 3-D, broadhead,
or field tips get wet at all. In fact, we have
recently built a large pole barn to house our targets and much more.
The club grounds offer a practice range with 70 meters being the
longest practice bale. There are four field tip/ 3-D courses and two
broadhead / 3-D courses to be used for our leagues and shoots.
There's also a fenced-in play area for the kids with a basketball
court set just behind the main building. The area around the
clubhouse has seen many a tent or camper on the annual shoot
weekends or on one of the special events that is held every year.
At one time in the early to mid eighties, Flint Bowmen boasted of
over three hundred family members on its active rolls. That was when
archery was the "up and coming" sport. Since then, there have been a
great number of clubs springing up to support the demand for
facilities to practice for the upcoming hunting season or just to
practice for the fun of it. From the beginning, Flint Bowmen Archery
Club has placed a lot of focus on our youth programs. From
Instructional Kids Leagues and our JOAD program to our very own
FBIYC youth club, we continue to share our love for archery with the
next generation.
So now that you know a little bit about Flint Bowmen's history,
why not stop by the club, join us and become a part of our future.
We'd love to see you here at the club.
